31st OCTOBER 2022: NSS Unit, Digboi college has observed the “Rastriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day)” in association with Margherita Sub-Division (Civil), IOCL(AOD), Indian Army, Digboi on 31st October 2022. National Unity Day or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is celebrated on 31st October every year since 2014 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This year marks the 147th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, a freedom fighter and later a politician who played a major role in the integration of India. The National Unity Day is observed in order to provide an opportunity to re-affirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation to withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity, and security of our country. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was India’s first deputy Prime Minister and is popularly known as the ‘Iron Man of India’. He played a major role in persuading over 500 princely states to accede to the independent Indian Union. He integrated all princely states into the newly independent India, despite several hurdles.
Digboi College has organised a “Run for Unity” program of 7 km in connection with National Unity Day. A total of 140 NSS Volunteers were present at the occasion. The NSS programme Officers of the institution viz. R. R. Tariang, Dr. K. Haloi, and Dr. N. Chamuah were also present. The program started with the inauguration speech by Mr. Palash Rajkumar Ahom, SDO (Civil), Margherita Block, followed by an oath-taking ceremony led by Indian Army Commandant, Digboi. The translation of the oath is as follows:
I solemnly pledge that I dedicate myself to preserving the unity, integrity, and security of the nation and also strive hard to spread this message among my fellow countrymen. I take this pledge in the spirit of the unification of my country which was made possible by the vision and actions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I also solemnly resolve to make my own contribution to ensure the internal security of my country.
