Department of Zoology conducts Great Backyard Bird Count
17th February 2023: Department of Zoology, Digboi College conducted bird counts at their campus in collaboration with eBird India and Bird Count India in the morning hours of 17/02/2023. Mr. Rajib Rudra Tariang, Head, Dept. of Zoology, takes the initiative to conduct the 4 days campus bird count in the morning along with the students of Digboi College from 17th to 20th February 2023. On the day, about 40 species of birds were sighted, with 92 individuals in the entire survey. Dr. Pragnesh Patel of Dadra and Naga Haveli, a famous birder of India who is also a professional medical doctor, was the key resource person for the students who delivered a fruitful lecture. Mr. Rajib Rudra Tariang guided the students during the bird count and the team of experts. Mr. Saswat Mishra, another birder of Bird Count India residing at Dadar and Naga Haveli, who is an Electrical Engineer and an M. Tech. Student have also guided the students in the field. Further, Mr. Pallav Pranjol Sarma of Guwahati, Mr. Debojit Phukan of Tinsukia, and Mr. Aovick Das Gutpa of Kaziranga were also present. Some of the unique birds sighted and photographed are the Barred Cuckoo Dove, Short-Billed Minivet, Longtailed Monivet, Vernal Hanging Parrot, White-throated Fantail, Hair-crested Drongo, Collared Treepie, Cinereous Tit, Pygmy Cupwing, Pin-striped Tit Babler, Verditer Flycatcher, Ruby-cheeked Sunbird, Streaked Spiderhunter, etc.
