National Service Scheme (NSS) is a social organization of an education institution across India to help and promote communities that are in need and develop them as far as possible. It aims to imprint social welfare responsibility in students through community services and thereby helps in building their personalities.
NSS volunteers are motivated and also trained in how to work for nature conservation, first aid in disasters, both man-made and natural, providing blood donations to the needy ones, organizing blood donation camps, visiting the flood affected areas, and lending hands for providing flood relief materials, tree plantation to save the mother earth, health, and hygiene, menstrual health, swachhata measures, POCSO Act, antitobacco campaigned, road safety measures, school education programme, etc. During a special camp for 7-10 days in a village community, a volunteer learns how to develop a village despite a scarcity of resources, develop a sense of social responsibility, and value of education.
We are proud that three NSS volunteers, Mr. Jyotishman Moran, Amit Biswakarma and Nayana Saikia of Digboi College, have been awarded the Best NSS Volunteers for the session 2017-18, 2019-20, and 2020-21 respectively, by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India for their outstanding work towards humanity in a village in all aspects. Similarly, a few more prestigious awards from State Level and University levels have also been bagged by the NSS Digboi College Unit recently. The student volunteers have come forward to upgrade the under-developed community, and thereby the sense of humanity, dignity, and positive mindset is been developed in the young minds, which contributes to the growth of the Nation-building process.
I am pleased to say that the NSS volunteers have contributed to the growth of the nation in the past, present, and will in future. Digboi College’s NSS Unit is more than 52 years old, and its establishment year is 1969 with 75 NSS Volunteers then, who have transformed many villagers and villages into self-responsibility and values of the nations.
